This course emphasizes oral and written communication. Students practice listening, conversation, writing/revising, and reading. Students are provided with a continued review of grammar and are introduced to new grammar structures. The vocabulary is taught from Spanish to Spanish (synonyms). Students are also taught to develop higher thinking skills such as synthesis, analysis, and evaluation. Students use technology (internet, television) to gather information necessary to complete individual and class projects and/or activities. Spanish is spoken in the classroom. Daily homework assignments are a course requirement.

Teaching Methods:
This course will consist of lectures (grammar with explanations), oral drills, group and individual presentations, skits, cultural discussions and projects, games, and various other instructional strategies. Students will be required to memorize and use vocabulary presented in the chapters. For successful mastery of the material, students will be required to speak and to communicate in the target language in class.
Homework:
Written and oral exercises will be assigned as a part of this course. Written assignments will be from the textbook, workbook, or any other suitable material. Written assignments may include student-generated dialogues, skits, poems and compositions. Compositions must be typed, using a font of 12 pt. minimum and be double spaced with correct headings that will be discussed in class. Late work will not be accepted, unless the student has an excused absence. Credit will not be given for work that is not legible. Students are expected to write so that their can be understood.

Tests and Quizzes:
Tests will be given after every chapter, approximately every 8 to 10 days. There will be 1-2 quizzes per week. It is important students study the material on a daily basis to ensure mastery of the subject.
Make Up Policy:
Students are expected to make up tests and quizzes according to the guidelines set forth in the Student Handbook. Students will receive a zero on any test or quiz not taken. It is the responsibility of the student to make up tests or quizzes within one week after an absence. If the test is not made up within that time, the zero will become permanent. Make up tests and quizzes will be given after school.
Discipline:
Students are expected to comply with the regulations stated in the Student Handbook. Students are expected to arrive to class promptly and be prepared with their textbook, assignments, and writing instruments. Students will receive a zero for the daily activities if they come unprepared and without supplies.
Helpful websites to aid in studying:
The book has a very good website with additional links to other sites. Students are encouraged to use these sites for practice, study guides and/ or reviews for quizzes, tests and exams.
Students experiencing difficulties with the course are encouraged to come in for tutorials on before or after school. If at all possible I request a 24 hour notice to ensure there is no conflict with meetings or prior appointments. If I am not personally available, the department has other teachers available who can assist students seeking help.
Students can helped from 5:30 to 7:30pm on Mondays and Thursday, in room 107. Students may come to tutoring in rm. 107 anytime during the 2 hr window period. Students are expected to come in with specific questions and class materials. Since there will be several students taking advantage of this tutoring, it is not possible to give extensive one-on-one tutoring.
