English IV and Reading Applications

A chief event of life is the day in which we have encountered a mind that startled us.   ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Teachers relish the moments when students dare to startle them simply by adding a new twist to a piece of literature.  The student that realizes his/her presence and contribution to the English class is significant just because he/she dares to think "outside the box" and share his/her analysis of the literature at hand is the student that changes our lives.  We appreciate these students as well as the students who have yet to realize they too have something significant to offer.  The educational journey is the ongoing journey in each of our lives.  My tenth grade history teacher once told me that if I go a day without learning something, I have lost the whole day.  His analysis of learning impacted my life profoundly.  What I want my students to realize is how much I learn from them as we venture forth together in our learning, and without their contributions, I can honestly give my own "twist" to what my tenth grade teacher said to me:  If I go a day without learning a new perspective from my students, I have indeed lost the whole day.  My students startle me, and for that, I am eternally grateful.  ~ Ms. Carlisle
