This Saturday, April 12, 8 a.m.-11 a.m., Cars and Coffee will host their last and largest event of the school-year at Woodforest Stadium. It is a free event, showcasing vehicles and a Touch-A-Truck for the younger car enthusiasts.
The Automotive Enthusiast Club started at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year after a couple of students had asked to start a car club towards the end of the prior school year.
“I told them that, that sounded awesome, but we only had six weeks left of school and to talk to me about it again in August,” Mr. Rogers explains.
Fast forward to August of 2020, the students brought up the idea of a car club to him again, “over the summer they kind of organized themselves, and it just kind of just went from there.”
Since then, the club has grown in a very large way within the school and within the community; doing food drives, Touch-A-Truck, and filling a truck for Christmas. It is also open to more than just high school students, allowing other people in the community to join.
“Yes, we’re a school club, but we do this for everyone and anybody can come. Our automotive enthusiasts club is the only club of this sort in Conroe ISD. It’s fun to be in the spotlight,” Rogers said. He adds, “it would be super cool to have-like-a rival meet or something.”
“We’ve had numerous club members that just kind of liked the idea of cars, and some of them want to learn more about the mechanics of them,” Rogers said. He explained that there is a diverse amount of knowledge across the club members. “In our after-school meetings, yes we plan our events, but we also take the time to learn how an engine works.”
Just like any other club here at the Woodlands High School, this club has a goal, to keep the love for cars alive, but also to teach the dangerous elements of them. “There’s a dark part of the car scene, you know, people get involved in some less than legal activities.” That is the exact opposite of what he wants these students to be around. “I, as a teacher, really wanted to make sure that I could help provide a space for kids to get into cars safely and responsibly,” Mr. Rogers said.
Don’t be afraid to drive by and enjoy Cars & Coffee this Saturday. If you are interested in joining the club, stop by and talk to Mr. Rogers.
